You’ll be staying in a star-rated campsite ideally located in the Gard, in a privileged environment.
Discover the Gard
One of Gard’s indisputable assets is its ancient heritage, with its exceptional historic sites and monuments.
- Nîmes is the jewel in the crown of this heritage, with its famous arenas, the Tour Magne and, of course, the Maison Carrée. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023, this remarkably well-preserved 1st-century temple bears witness to the city’s central role in the Roman Empire.
- There are also majestic bridges that have stood the test of time, such as the Roman bridge at Sommières and the famous Pont du Gard, also a UNESCO World Heritage site. Several sites reveal the daily life of the Gallo-Roman era, such as the Terriers archaeological site in Villevieille.
- There are two other UNESCO-recognized sites in the Gard: the architectural masterpiece that is the Abbey of Saint-Gilles, and the natural treasure of the Causses and Cévennes, ancestral landscapes that can be admired tirelessly. Other natural areas to visit in the Gard include the gorges. The most famous are the Gardon gorges, where you can swim and enjoy water sports.
- The Gard is a land of terroir and tradition. Cutlery, pottery, glass-blowing: don’t miss out on local craftsmanship, thanks to the creators of the Pays d’Uzès, for example. In the Petite Camargue, which is part of the Gard region, you can also visit manades to immerse yourself in the local culture around wild bulls.
Family activities in the Gard
The Cévennes are one of the most beautiful parts of the Gard, an exceptional area that’s a must-see during your camping vacation in Anduze.
Family discoveries
Take the whole family out to discover the beautiful villages of the Cevennes. Here are a few ideas for outings:
- A stopover in Anduze, to contemplate this charming, picturesque little town, and stroll through the Parc des Cordeliers and the Bambouseraie.
- And don’t miss Saint-Jean du Gard, “the pearl of the Cévennes”, not far away. And enjoy a unique experience on the steam train that links these 2 villages, taking you on a timeless journey through the countryside.
- We should also mention the town of Portes and its magnificent château
- Valleraugue, this pretty Cevennes village lies at the foot of Mont Aigoual, another of the Gard’s must-see sites. Nicknamed ” the roof of the Gard “, Mont Aigoual rises to an altitude of 1,567 metres, offering breathtaking panoramic views. From the Alps to the Pyrenees, and from the Sancy to the Mediterranean, you can enjoy a breathtaking view!
- Mont Aigoual is accessible not only by car, but also to more experienced hikers and mountain bikers, thanks to its well-developed trails. Other hiking trails in the heart of the Parc des Cévennes allow you and your family to discover the most beautiful landscapes in the Cévennes.
Nature and hikingin the Gard
There are many hiking options in the Gard. For a family outing off the beaten track, venture to the Château de Tornac, less than 10 minutes from the Castel Rose campsite. A 2.7 km loop allows you to admire it from every angle, before visiting the monument, which will be embellished by renovation work in 2023.
The most original option is certainly to go hiking with a donkey, to discover nature at the animal’s pace. For example, you could set off from Mialet, a quarter of an hour from the Castel Rose campsite, to follow the Stevenson trail.
The final destination is Saint-Jean-du-Gard, a charming village 15 minutes from the campsite. Here you can visit the so-called Maison Rouge, home to the Musée des Vallées cévenoles. Here you can discover a thousand secrets about the Cévennes, and in summer there’s a treasure hunt as well as live entertainment.
From Saint-Jean-du-Gard, take the famous steam train through the Cévennes to Anduze. For a family outdoor activity, don’t miss a visit to the Bambouseraie, an exotic garden featuring thousands of fascinating plants, a plant maze and aerial trails. The kids love it!
In Mialet, you’ll also find the Grotte de Trabuc. With its famous 100,000 soldiers and a multitude of fascinating rock carvings, it’s a great place to visit with the whole family.
Last but not least, we can’t talk about the Gard and Cévennes without mentioning its terroir, the expertise of its craftsmen and its gastronomy. Don’t hesitate to meet the producers who will help you discover and taste their specialities, such as the famous Cévennes honey, Pélardon or chestnuts.
