Mialet, a Cévennes jewel near our campsite

A UNESCO World Heritage site, the Cévennes village of Mialet played an important role in the Camisard revolt. Today, Mialet offers a peaceful, authentic atmosphere. Discover its rich historical and natural heritage through its old stones, museums, caves and hiking trails.

The Gard village of Mialet lies between Anduze and Saint Jean du Gard, a few kilometers from Alès. The commune comprises 7 hamlets. Mialet was a hotbed of the Camisard revolt and the Wars of Religion. Today, Mialet attracts visitors for its relaxing setting and beautiful landscapes.

In the village, admire the Pont des Camisards, a listed historic monument. Mialet is also home to other religious and cultural sites, such as the 17th-century Saint-André church and the Temple, rebuilt in the 19th century. Next, discover the scenic beauty of this Cévennes village. Mialet boasts a dozen signposted trails that can be explored on foot, mountain bike or even donkey! The 3 km Col d’Uglas trail is suitable for the whole family. The Chemin Camisard trail from Mialet is 146 km long! For a good compromise, opt for the 13 km Mas Pagès circuit, which allows you to explore a wild and unspoilt natural environment.

Finally, from Mialet, join the Gardon River at the Pont des Camisards. There are many pleasant swimming spots in this natural setting. In summer, when the level of the Gardon allows it, you can kayak down the 20 km-long river.

In Mialet, don’t miss the Musée du Désert at Mas de Soubeyran. This museum retraces the history of Protestantism and provides a better understanding of the daily life of Protestant resistance fighters in the Cévennes.
The Trabuc cave is also well worth a visit. This living cave, sculpted by the waters of the Cevennes, offers a fascinating spectacle, particularly with its “100,000 soldiers”, unique in the world. How were these miniature concretions formed? To this day, the mystery remains unsolved.

Heading towards Anduze from Mialet, enjoy a timeless interlude at La Bambouseraie en Cévennes, an exotic garden unique in Europe. Discover a zen-like plant world featuring thousands of plant species (bamboos, giant magnolias, redwoods, banana trees, etc.). For an unusual arrival at the Bamboo Garden, climb aboard the Cévennes steam train that links Anduze to Saint Jean du Gard. Aboard this authentic steam train, take a 13 km ride through the Gardons valley.

Finally, to round off your discovery of the Mialet area, take a family pedal into the heart of the Cévennes on the Cévennes Velorail. Departing from the station at Thoiras (14 km from Mialet), get on board these original machines that move forward at the strength of your calves. In 1h30 (6 km) or 2h30 (10 km), enjoy the Cévennes countryside at your own pace. This unusual ride offers beautiful views of the Gardons crossroads and the surrounding countryside.
