Mialet, a Cévennes jewel near our campsite

A UNESCO World Heritage site, the Cévennes village of Mialet played an important role in the Camisard revolt. Today, Mialet offers a peaceful, authentic atmosphere. Discover its rich historical and natural heritage through old stones, museums, caves and hiking trails.

The Gard village of Mialet lies between Anduze and Saint Jean du Gard, a few kilometers from Alès. The commune is made up of 7 hamlets. Mialet was a hotbed of the Camisard revolt and the Wars of Religion. Today, Mialet attracts visitors for its relaxing setting and beautiful landscapes.

In the village, admire the Camisards bridge, listed as a historic monument. Mialet is also home to other religious and cultural sites, such as the 17th-century Saint-André church and the Temple, rebuilt in the 19th century. Then, discover the scenic beauty of this Cevennes village. Mialet boasts a dozen signposted trails that can be explored on foot, mountain bike or even donkey! The 3 km Col d’Uglas circuit is accessible to the whole family. The Chemin Camisard circuit from Mialet is 146 km long! For a good compromise, opt for the 13 km Mas Pagès circuit, which allows you to explore unspoilt wilderness.

Finally, from Mialet, join the Gardon river at the Camisards bridge. The swimming spots are very pleasant in this natural setting. In summer, when the Gardon’s water level permits, you can kayak down the 20 km-long river.

In Mialet, don’t miss the Musée du Désert at Mas de Soubeyran. This museum retraces the history of Protestantism and provides an insight into the daily life of Protestant resistance fighters in the Cévennes.
The Trabuc cave is also well worth a visit. This living cave, sculpted by the waters, is a fascinating sight, with its “100,000 soldiers” unique in the world. How did these miniature concretions form? Even today, the mystery remains.

Heading towards Anduze from Mialet, enjoy a timeless interlude at the Bambouseraie en Cévennes, an exotic garden unique in Europe. Discover a zen-like plant world featuring thousands of plant species (bamboos, giant magnolias, redwoods, banana trees, etc.). For an unusual arrival at La Bambouseraie, climb aboard the Cévennes steam train from Anduze to Saint Jean du Gard. Aboard this authentic steam train, take a 13 km tour of the Gardons valley.

Finally, to round off your discovery of the Mialet area, pedal your family through the heart of the Cévennes on the Cévennes Velorail. Departing from the station in Thoiras (14 km from Mialet), you can ride these original machines that move forward with the strength of your calves. In 1h30 (6 km) or 2h30 (10 km), enjoy the Cévennes countryside at your own pace. This unusual walk offers beautiful views of the Gardons crossroads and the surrounding countryside.
